Dear Uncle Chung, a query regarding Work Pass Holder

Dear Uncle Chung, my friend is from China and he is currently working here as a driver with Work Pass ("WP").

He is considering change job (the new job will also be driver). Does he need to cancel his current WP and back to China and then apply for new WP to back Singapore? Or could he stay in Singapore and apply for new WP and exchange the new WP with his old WP?

Many thanks!

Looking forward to hear from you!

Merry X'mas and Happy New Year!

The employer are required by law to cancel the work permit within 7 days since the finishing of employment.

And after his work permit is cancelled, he can only stay in Singapore for another 7 days which could not be extended again.

If his new employer could successfully apply a new work permit for him within 7 days, he do not need to go back to China, otherwise he need to wait the result in China and back to Singapore when he get the new work permit.
